Oil platforms in Sonda de Campeche, a powder keg

405

Due to the lack of maintenance of the marine and submarine facilities of Petróleos Mexicanos (Pemex) and the dubious hiring of companies such as Cotemar, the Sonda de Campeche has become a powder keg, as there is a latent threat of accidents that can cause dozens of deaths and serious impacts to the environment.

This was alerted by the spokesperson for the citizen organization For the Defense of Pemex, Mirna Guadalupe Hernández Torres, and regretted the accident at the Nohoch Alfa Enlace platform, in which two workers lost their lives and one more remains unlocated.

Pemex and the directors of the 4T, headed by its general director Octavio Romero Oropeza, intend to mock the intelligence of Mexicans by wanting to blame the deaths of accidents at all times, without recognizing that part of this responsibility is theirs.

“It is no secret to anyone that the main policy of the current Pemex administrators is production, but from the beginning we made it known that the higher the pressure and without proper maintenance of pipelines and equipment, the risk of accidents increases.”

He recalled that years ago accidents occurred on offshore platforms such as Abkatún and E Ku 2, resulting in dozens of deaths and injuries, which must have been an indicator of the urgency of promoting maintenance actions at oil facilities.

“Investigations of the causes must be professional for prevention purposes, and not with a protectionist attitude towards the company and to try to hold the workers accountable, because this will not improve the conditions of abandonment in which some teams are.”

In the last three years, the resources invested in maintenance have not been sufficient, and some facilities do not receive money for this item, which is why the Sonda de Campeche has turned into a powder keg that, if it explodes, will leave irreversible consequences, remarked Hernández Torres.

We demand that Pemex and the Federal Government apply policies to protect the environment and safety, to prevent accidents from continuing to occur, the severity of which will increase.
