Last year, the state welcomed 330,631 visitors across its 19 existing museums—figures that placed Campeche 12th nationwide among states with the lowest visitor turnout at these cultural spaces.
According to local residents and visitors alike, the lack of promotion for attractions such as the Jade Mask—currently on display at the Baluarte de la Soledad—combined with limited advertising for each of these venues, contributes to the low number of Campeche residents visiting museums to immerse themselves in regional culture. Residents such as Kely, Jorge, young Gabriel, and Manuel explained that a more extensive information campaign is needed to raise awareness of the city’s cultural offerings; they noted that they currently recognize only the most popular venues—at least by name—including the archaeological museums at San Miguel and San José el Alto. Jorge highlighted the cultural significance of visiting a museum, ranging from acquiring new knowledge to appreciating unique artifacts from Campeche and the wider Maya region.
According to INEGI’s 2026 Museum Statistics, the state reported a total of 330,631 visitor entries across its 19 museums last year. Of these, 306,259 were classified as visitors to exhibitions, while 24,372 were recorded as attendees at other events—including artistic, cultural, academic, educational, civic, and social activities.
Compared to its neighboring states on the peninsula, Campeche ranked second-to-last in terms of visitor numbers. Yucatán, with 22 museums, reported 888,304 entries; Quintana Roo, with 13 museums, recorded the arrival of 534,452 people; while Tabasco, with 18 museums, tallied 299,582 visitors. Nationwide, Mexico City—home to 166 museums—was the entity that received the highest number of visitors to these cultural spaces, reporting an attendance of 25,807,320 people. In contrast, Baja California Sur saw the lowest level of activity; across its seven museums, it recorded an attendance of a mere 51,420 people.
