At least three hooded men, armed with an axe and a pistol, attacked the vessel Baltic, owned by the company Mexmar, on May 8th at approximately 10:40 p.m. in the Bay of Campeche. This is the first time images of an attack by modern-day pirates in the area have been released.

Four people linked to the federal Sembrando Vida (Sowing Life) program were murdered in the municipality of Calakmul, Campeche.

According to images circulating on social media, the attack occurred as the vessel was leaving the navigation channel, near the berth buoy of the Port of Isla del Carmen, en route to the offshore platform area.

Around 10:43 p.m., the three hooded men surprised the security personnel, pointed a gun at the helmsman, took his cell phone, and did the same to the other security personnel.

From behind, one of the criminals hits the security guard on the head and signals him to lie down with an axe. Apparently unaware they are being recorded, they help the young man, who is still navigating the area, back to his seat.

It was reported that the men intercepted the vessel belonging to the Mexican company Mantenimiento Express Marítimo, which transports food and supplies to the offshore platforms of the Akal complex, located in the Cantarell production field. The men were aboard a small fishing boat equipped with an outboard motor.

Facebook users also criticized the guard for being more focused on his cell phone than on maintaining constant vigilance, and criticized the lack of security provided by the Mexican Navy. Others pointed out that, as a merchant ship, it lacks the equipment necessary to detect piracy.

So far in 2026, there have been four attacks on platforms and ships in the Bay of Campeche.
