Campeche becomes the most violent state in the country, for one day.

For the first time in its history, Campeche climbed to the infamous list of the most violent states in the country on Friday, May 8, 2026, surpassing states historically more affected by violence, such as Guanajuato, the State of Mexico, and Sinaloa. According to the Security Cabinet report, the state registered 5 intentional homicides, surpassing Guanajuato, which reported only 2, and Baja California, also with 2; as well as the State of Mexico with 3 and Sinaloa with 4.

However, the actual number of intentional homicides in Campeche that day was far more alarming. Nine violent murders were recorded, of which 4 occurred in Calakmul, 2 in Escárcega, and 3 in San Francisco de Campeche. Despite this data, the state government, headed by Governor Layda Sansores, reported only 5 homicides, omitting the 4 cases in Calakmul, which were not only intentional homicides but also extremely violent.

This means that the state government, led by Layda Elena Sansores Sanroman, manipulated the figures to avoid the state being labeled as the most violent in the country. The reduced number highlighted the apparent disconnect between reality and the government’s efforts to maintain the image of a “Safe Campeche.”
