The governor of Campeche, Layda Sansores, was met with boos from fans at Nelson Barrera Romellón Stadium during the opening ceremony of the 2016 Mexican Baseball League season on April 22.
When she was introduced as a special guest, a loud chorus of boos erupted throughout the stadium. The reaction didn’t stop there: as she walked toward the field, attendees punctuated the moment with shouts of “Out, out!”
The incident was captured in several videos that went viral on social media. The footage shows the widespread rejection of the governor during the start of the national baseball season.
The situation generated even more discussion after the Campeche Pirates refrained from posting videos of the opening ceremony on their official platforms, limiting themselves to sharing photographs. For many users, this decision was an attempt to minimize the media impact of the fans’ reaction.
The governor attended the event after canceling her usual “Jaguar Tuesday” program; however, her presence was met with boos from the audience. On the field, the Campeche Pirates started with a resounding 11-0 victory over the Quintana Roo Tigers.
