Navy Deploys Troops to Prevent Disaster as Hurricane Erick Looms Over Mexico

The Secretariat of the Navy (SEMAR) has activated its Marine Plan in Prevention Phase in the states of Colima, Tabasco, and Campeche, as well as Oaxaca and Guerrero, to protect the population from the expected landfall of Hurricane Erick.

According to weather forecasts, the Category 1 hurricane is currently located 202 kilometers south-southeast of Puerto Ángel, Oaxaca, and is expected to make landfall between 7:00 and 9:00 a.m. this Thursday, June 19, near Punta Maldonado, Guerrero, as a Category 2 hurricane with the potential to reach Category 3.

Heavy rainfall and strong winds are predicted, with the possibility of life-threatening flooding and landslides, especially in areas with steep terrain, rising waters, and overflowing rivers and lagoon systems. Authorities warn of torrential rains that could cause flash flooding and landslides in mountainous areas, as well as the overflowing of rivers and bodies of water.

The Navy has deployed troops to mitigate the effects of the storm, with 1,722 personnel, 159 members of the Emergency Response Brigade, 18 vehicles, 14 boats, five power generating plants, four water treatment plants, a mobile kitchen, nine chainsaws, and two bilge pumps mobilized in Colima. In Tabasco, the Third Naval Region has deployed 7,208 troops, along with 315 members of the Emergency Response Brigade, 42 vehicles, seven ships, 13 boats, 11 aircraft, four mobile kitchens, and four power plants.

The Marine Prevention Phase Plan includes actions focused on reducing risks and protecting the population, infrastructure, public services, the productive environment, and the environment through ongoing activities and preparations for the imminent threat of destructive natural phenomena.
