The Campeche State Congress approved a bill seeking to protect children and adolescents from “sex tourism” due to its proximity to Quintana Roo, a state with a high tourist influx and documented cases of child sexual exploitation.
One of the primary objectives of the initiative is to establish or create a list of sanctions for those who fail to report or tolerate acts of child sexual exploitation within their services or facilities.
According to the initiative presented by Movimiento Ciudadano, the proposal addresses three important points: amending Articles 3 and 70, as well as adding Article 36Bís to the “Tourism Law of the State of Campeche” on the aforementioned matter.
The objectives of the proposal are to establish clear conditions for tourism service providers regarding the prevention of child sexual exploitation and human trafficking.
It also includes the prevention of sexual violence against children and adolescents as a guiding criterion in planning the state’s tourism development.
Other objectives pursued are to prioritize training for tourism personnel on issues related to the protection of children’s rights, with a focus on identifying risk situations.
