As the scorching temperatures continue to soar above 40°C (104°F) in Campeche, animal welfare advocates are sounding the alarm about the dangers of neglecting pets during this time. Rescuer Nancy French Carrión warns that exposing animals to the intense heat without proper protection can be fatal and is punishable by law.
Leaving pets unattended on hot pavements or in direct sunlight, even without access to water or tied up, puts them at risk of heat stroke and death. According to Carrión, this behavior constitutes animal abuse and can result in fines ranging from 12,000 to 22,000 pesos, as well as imprisonment for six months to three years.
The activist emphasizes that the high temperatures not only affect humans but also pose a significant threat to animals if their owners fail to take precautions. She urges Campeche residents to keep their pets indoors during the hottest part of the day and to provide them with fresh water in shaded areas.
Carrión advises pet owners to recognize signs of heat distress, such as agitation or excessive licking of lips. In these cases, it’s essential to cool down the animal by wetting it and providing a shady place for rest. By taking these simple precautions, pet owners can help prevent heat-related tragedies and ensure their furry friends receive the care they need during this hot season.
The Mexican government has taken steps to address animal welfare concerns, and Carrión encourages citizens to report any cases of animal abuse or neglect to the authorities.
