Washington DC.- The president-elect of the United States, Joe Biden, highlighted the need to revitalize cooperation between his country and Mexico, to guarantee safe and orderly migration, contain Covid-19, boost the North American economy, and secure the common border.

In the first telephone conversation he had with President Andrés Manuel López Obrador, he promised to work closely with Mexico and other regional partners during the first months of his administration to build the necessary regional and border infrastructure and capacities, in order to facilitate a new orderly and humane approach to migration, which respects international standards on the treatment of asylum applications.

Biden thanked López Obrador for his congratulations on his victory in the last November elections and expressed his commitment to building a solid relationship with Mexico based on respect for the rule of law and the advancement of shared values.

In a statement, it was reported that the two leaders highlighted their shared desire to deal with the root causes of migration in El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, and southern Mexico, to build a future of greater opportunity and security in the region.

They discussed collaboration on a new approach to this issue that offers alternatives to undertaking the dangerous journey to the United States.

Biden reaffirmed his campaign commitments, although he noted that it takes time and resources to effectively fulfill them.

In addition to working with governments on migration issues, he said that he will also do so with civil society, the private sector, and international organizations.
