Graciela Márquez, Secretary of Economy, plans to propose to Apple the relocation of all or part of its factories in Mexico
Mexico is ready to promote the relocation in the territory of part of the big Apple production factories in Asia. This has been revealed by the Secretary of Economy Graciela Márquez, in the framework of talks on the Treaty between Mexico, the United States and Canada (USMCA) to promote trade in these countries.
It is collected by Reuters after an interview with Márquez, where the Secretary emphasized Mexico’s industrial capabilities. In this sense, it seeks to strengthen, especially, the investment in the territory for the manufacture of steel for the automotive sector.
In this sense, President Andrés Manuel López Obrador would have held conversations with several foreign firms in order to propose investment or production proposals located in Mexico.

The automotive industry is not the only focus on which attention is focused, however. At the same time, the Mexican Secretary revealed that the Government will seek to speak with Apple and other US companies so that they consider locating part of their production plants located in Asia on local land.
The attempt comes amid long-running trade tensions between China and the United States. This situation, to which the acts of the Trump Administration against Huawei are added, has forced numerous firms to consider the relocation of their production plants in other countries of the Asian continent for fear of possible retaliation or tariffs that the Chinese Government could establish to American manufacturers.
Mexico seeks to take advantage of this and obtain, along the way, manufacturing contracts in the country. In their favor they have the undoubted fact of proximity to the United States and Apple’s own headquarters , for example, which is located in Cupertino, California.
North American and European companies that currently manufacture their products in China, Vietnam, and Singapore would be among the current Mexican targets. “These phones do not have to be produced in China,” said Márquez to the aforementioned newspaper. At the same time, politics expressed the existence of “an enormous opportunity” to do the same in Mexico.
