The Mexican Navy announced that personnel deployed in Operation Lifesaver provided security for approximately 200 baby sea turtles during their hatching on Sabancuy Beach in the state of Campeche.
The assistance was provided after naval personnel were alerted by beachgoers, who reported a sea turtle nest in the area after a dog disturbed the sand.
“Therefore, security was provided to ensure the hatchlings reached the sea safely and to prevent them from being preyed upon by birds.”
The agency reported that sea turtles are a migratory species, and female hawksbill turtles typically return to the beaches where they were born to nest each year, laying more than a hundred eggs.
“With these actions, the Mexican Navy, through the Mexican Navy, reaffirms its commitment to supporting the protection of the marine environment and species that are vulnerable to natural agents that endanger life,” the Navy stated in a press release.
