In the period from January to July 2025, eight of the country’s 31 capital cities registered an increase in the number of investigations initiated for murders (intentional homicide and femicide) compared to the same period in 2024.
Campeche leads the list with 260 percent more crimes.
According to records from the Executive Secretariat of the National Public Security System (SESNSP), Campeche capital went from five cases initiated for murders in the 2024 reference period to 18 in 2025.
Culiacán, Sinaloa, is the capital city with the second largest increase in the number of cases for a crime. It went from 173 to 551, representing an increase of 218.5 percent.
Hermosillo, Sonora, is the capital city with the third largest increase in the number of murder cases in the country. It went from 80 to 110, an increase of 37.5 percent.
The other five capital cities with an increase in the incidence of murders are Guanajuato; Oaxaca, Xalapa, Ciudad Victoria, and Mexicali, which saw increases of 2 to 25 percent.
In contrast, 19 capital cities across the country registered a decrease in the number of cases initiated for murder.
Zacatecas, Colima, and Tuxtla Gutiérrez top the list with reductions of 68.42, 62.50, and 58.62 percent, respectively.
San Luis Potosí, Tlaxcala, Cuernavaca, La Paz, Aguascalientes, Toluca, Guadalajara, Monterrey, Saltillo, Chihuahua, Durango, Chilpancingo, Puebla, Querétaro, Pachuca, and Morelia complete the list.
Mérida and Tepic recorded no change, while Chetumal and Villahermosa do not appear in the SESNSP database.
Alfonso Martínez Alcázar, mayor of Morelia, highlighted that homicides in that city fell from a monthly average of 42 in 2021 (when he took office) to 13 cases per month in 2025, a decrease of more than a third.
Interviewed by El Financiero as part of his First Government Report, he stated that the most impactful crimes in the city have seen a reduction of between 30 and 60 percent in the last four years.
“We are committed to protecting those who protect us, to strengthening and training our police force to reduce the crimes committed in Morelia,” he stated.
He thanked the National Guard, the Army, and the state government for their support, affirming that they coordinate with each other to combat crime. He emphasized that the Morelia Police Force is the first in the country to pass 100 percent of its officers in security and reliability tests.
