With the December holidays, it is expected that about 20 thousand people will arrive at the archaeological sites and restaurants.

Although the opening of museums, bastions, and archaeological sites was gradual, they are the ones that report the highest number of visitors in the last two months since Campeche changed to the Green Epidemiological Light.

According to the report of the Ministry of Tourism (Sectur), the most visited are Casa Seis, Puerta de Tierra bastion, the “X’much-Haltún” Botanical Garden, the Guard Corps, and the Museum of Underwater Archeology.

However, the number of visitors estimated at 20 thousand during the winter holiday season does not compare with the figure of 2019, when the arrival of 1.3 million tourists was reported, an annual increase of 4.0% compared to 2018 when the entry of 1.57 million tourists was registered.

For the Secretary of Tourism, Jorge Manos Esparragoza, 2019 has been the best year for Campeche in tourism, where national tourism makes the difference with 82% of visitors, therefore the strategy is to take advantage of this population segment.

Currently, the entity is holding the International Festival of the Historic Center, due to limitations the number of visitors is low; however, they have made use of the City Board Tramways and the opening of the museums of the Ministry of Tourism (Sectur) and the National Institute of Anthropology and History (INAH).

Manos Esparragoza highlighted that fortunately, they work together in the tourist centers of Campeche, where he recognized that the INAH and Sectur work attract significant numbers of tourists.

Regarding the number of visitors per day in each Sectur museum, it was highlighted by staff in charge that the influx of visitors exceeds 100 visits per day, and the favorite attractions are the Casa Seis and the attraction of Puerta de Tierra.

Visiting Hours

The working hours
Casa Seis, Puerta de Tierra, and the Guard Corps are open from 09:00 to 19:00, while the Botanical Garden opens its doors from 09:00 to 16:00.

The Puerta de Tierra is a military construction from 1732, since the beginning of the 21st century, it offers from Thursday to Sunday a light and sound show called “The place of the sun” dedicated to showing the colonial era.

Other Sectur shows are the “Paseo de Ronda” from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., while the light and sound show, “El Lugar del sol”, at 7:00 p.m. and 8:00 p.m., both in Puerta de Tierra.

The Museum

The Museum of Underwater Archeology (Marsub) is another of the most visited sites, which was reopened on September 8, located in the San José El Alto Fort.

The Marsub provisionally modified its visiting hours and days, with tours from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m., from Tuesday to Saturday, it houses an exceptional collection composed of objects from archaeological contexts submerged in marine waters of the Gulf of Mexico and the Caribbean Mexican, as well as rivers, lakes, lagoons, springs, streams, cenotes, flooded and semi-flooded caves and land reclaimed from the sea of the Yucatan Peninsula.

“It is exciting to see a significant number of visitors on the streets of the Historic Center of Campeche, as well as in some points of other municipalities, an example of these is Becal in Calkiní,” he recalled.

Trolley car

Trolley tour services, by the City Council, are another important tourist attraction.

Manos Esparragoza revealed that the tours go at their maximum allowed capacity and tourists respect the safety measures against COVID-19, such as the use of a mask and the Sana Distancia.

Regarding the extension of hours of activities and sale of alcoholic beverages, he recalled that it is important news that helps the tourism sector a lot despite the pandemic since the urgency of businessmen is to recover economically.

“Now with the news of the extension of working hours and the sale of alcoholic beverages, at the request of restaurateurs and hoteliers, more benefits can be received,” he explained.

Manos Esparragoza said that this is important because some tourists go out to dinner early and others later, which allows raising the average consumption income in diner businesses.
