Campeche, Camp. The Xpujil Popular and Indigenous Regional Council (CRIPX) denounced attacks, acts of intimidation, and threats against its members and leaders for opposing the construction of the Maya Train in that region and reiterated that the National Tourism Promotion Fund (Fonatur) has refused to provide information and documentation for analysis, understanding, position, and decision regarding that project.
“The only thing that we have received from FONATUR and other government institutions that are involved in this megaproject is partial, limited, biased, unclear information and without any support materials or attachments,” they said in a statement.
They denounced that on September 20 financial information, equipment and bank cards were stolen from the room of the administrator of the Regional Council. On Tuesday, September 23, another colleague from CRIPX received a threatening message via WhatsApp.
“This robbery and threat must be understood in the context of pointing out that we have been objects of various civil society organizations and as an indigenous organization of defamation, stigmatization and, above all, criminalization by the Mexican State,” the CRIPX said in a statement.
“We have been humiliated in graphic, online, radio and television communication media, due to our organizational opposition, that is authentic, real, deep and with cultural identity because there are going to be negative impacts generated at the community, cultural, social, environmental, productive and tourist level, of the misnamed Maya Train”, the CRIPX continued.
They pointed out that as an organization they have attended most of the public events to which they were invited to hear and learn about everything related to this megaproject, they also attended meetings before the Municipal Council, Technical Council of the Reserve, Informative Assembly, meetings to present a part of their development poles and when Semarnat opened the Public Consultation, they requested that their participation be registered and their comments submitted, but they claim to be ignored.
The CRIPX accused the Government of the Republic of fabricating lies, providing half-hearted information, persecuting dissidents, and promoting false promises of participation and access to benefits without documents about what the Maya Train really is.
The CRIPX, unlike other groups, promotes knowledge, the dissemination of individual and collective rights and especially the defense of the territory of indigenous peoples, emphasized the peasant organization.
