Explore ancient Mayan ruins in the Yucatán
Plenty of people head to the Mayan Riviera for the beaches of Cancún, and who can blame them?! However, dig a little deeper into this peninsula and you’ll find some of the most fascinating archaeological ruins in the whole of Latin America.
Check out the Ancient Fortress of Tulum, the only fortified Mayan ruin to be found at the coast. Visit the temple complex at Cobá, where you can take in the views of the jungle from the highest Mayan pyramid still standing. However, the daddy of them all is Chichén Itzá (even though it’s not as old as Cobá!) Over 2 million people visit this UNESCO World Heritage site, also known as the Mayan Metropolis, and it’s not hard to see why!
After visiting all the ruins and temples, you’ll probably want to relax and cool off. Do that by swimming in an underground cenote!
Get involved in the Day of the Dead Celebrations
This ancient celebration has burst into popular culture in recent years. It’s even made an appearance in a James Bond film! However, that didn’t really give too much of an explanation about this fabulous festival. Celebrated on the 2nd November every year, El Día de los Muertos is a combination of pre-Hispanic cultures and Catholicism. Although it’s so close to Hallowe’en in the calendar, don’t confuse the two. El Día de los Muertos is actually older!
The best place to experience El Día de los Muertos is Oaxaca. Here, there’s a carnival like atmosphere and parties last well into the early hours. The traditional costumes and painted faces are quite something! There are also parades during the day, and more sombre events to commemorate the deaths of loved ones.
Sample the incredible cuisine
Mexican cuisine dates back 9,000 years and has been shaped by the different tribes and empires that have settled on these lands. Nowadays, it’s a vibrant, colourful, and most importantly, delicious cuisine that you’ll not be able to get enough of!
As well as the standard enchiladas, burritos, and tacos that we all know, make sure you try more adventurous dishes. Oaxaca’s chocolate chili mole sauce, fish tacos of Baja California, and cochinita pibil from Yucatán! Of course, you have to round off your meal with a shot of tequila or mezcal!
Discover the art of Frida Kahlo
If you’re in and around the capital, Mexico City, you’ll quickly notice it’s a hotbed of art and culture. And what better way to learn more about Mexican art than visiting the former home of its most famous artist: Frida Kahlo? The Blue House shows the works of where this iconic artist was born, lived most of her life, and eventually passed away. You can also check out the Dolores Olmedo Museum and the Museum of Contemporary art if you want to see more of her masterpieces.
There’s so much more than just art in Mexico city too – don’t miss the Aztec pyramid right in downtown, and the city’s historic centre!
Spot whales off the Baja California Peninsula
Baja California is one of the best places to see the biggest animal in the world! Especially if you’re visiting from December to April. Tours or fishing boats can take you out into the Bahía de Loreto Parque Nacional to get you up close and personal with these gentle giants, who come to this area to raise their young.
It’s not just whales either. The Sea of Cortez is known as the aquarium of Mexico, and the waters are some of the most biodiverse in the world. This is an unforgettable bucket list experience!
