Japan raised its travel alert to Mexico and other countries in Latin America to level 3 and recommended that its citizens not visit these regions as a measure to prevent further spread of coronavirus.
Japanese Foreign Minister Toshimitsu Motegi reported in a conference that the Shinzo Abe government also increased the alert level for Uruguay, Colombia, Honduras, among other destinations that include countries located in the Middle East region.
In addition, the official explained that he will prohibit non-Japanese citizens who visited the listed countries two weeks ago from entering the island.
The country entry restriction now includes a total of 100 countries, including the United States, Canada, South Korea, China, Ecuador, Chile, Panama, Brazil, the United Kingdom, Italy, Germany, France, and Greece.
In terms of tourism, the main impact that Japan has suffered is the postponement for one year of the Olympic Games in Tokyo, which were scheduled to start in July 2020.
So far, Japan has detected the spread of 15,847 people and 533 deaths caused by the coronavirus, according to the Johns Hopkins University in the United States.
The level 3 alert is the second-highest on the safety scale implemented by the Japanese government. The fourth level – which is the highest level – requires Japanese citizens to vacate a country or area and avoid all types of travel.
So far, Japan is one of the countries that did not issue containment measures for its population due to coronavirus.
