Cancun Airport did not exceed the record 26 million, passengers

Since 2015, the air terminal had registered growths of more than 1 million passengers each year, so the executives of Grupo Aeroportuario del Sureste (Asur) anticipated that in 2019 they would reach 26 million. However, the company that held celebrations every year for the records achieved, last year did not hold any ceremony.

According to data from the Ministry of Communications and Transportation, in the January-November period of last year the Cancun airport reached 23.2 million passengers, which meant an annual increase of 1.1 percent.

To overcome the record of 26 million, the air terminal would have to register the traffic of 3 million passengers during December, although less than two weeks after the end of the year, Eduardo Rivadeneyra, spokesman for the airport, said the numbers have not yet They allowed us to anticipate if they could overcome the 2018 record (25.4 million).

This resulted in the traditional ceremony organized by Asur with the presence of local authorities, in which the passenger is received that in the last days of the year allowed them to exceed the record in visitor traffic.

In 2018, the Cancun terminal reached 25.4 million passengers; in 2017, 23.6 million; in 2016, 21.4 million, and in 2015, 19.5 million.

In a recent interview, Carlos Trueba, director of the Cancun airport, mentioned that they were confident of exceeding, for the fourth consecutive year, the record in passenger traffic.

In addition, he indicated that due to this dynamism in recent years, expansion works were already scheduled at terminals 2 and 3 to increase the airport’s capacity to handle 30 million annual visitors.

According to Asur statistics, the Cancun airport spun the months of July, August and September with casualties in international tourism reception.

Roberto Cintrón, president of the Hotel Association of Cancun and Puerto Morelos, said it was foreseeable that the growth streak of the Mexican Caribbean would be interrupted in recent years, “in 2019 the perfect storm was formed with the combination of several elements, such as insecurity news, massive sargassum and the cancellation of resources for promotion by the federal government. ”

“The only way to reverse this situation is to continue investing in promotional campaigns and from the Quintana Roo government it seems they are getting it,” he said.
